Now, that we have established just how magical this product is, I wanted to share a series of tried and true simple recipes using baking soda for your home. This single product may become one of your very favorites to have at home. The following recipes are broken down into 3 main categories: beauty, health & cleaning. Enjoy!
beauty
1. Make-Up Brush Cleaner
Did you know that 72% of women neglect to regularly wash their makeup brushes and sponges? Myself included. Washing your brushes will prevent dirt build-up and bacteria growth, known to cause outbreaks. A simple recipe to clean your brushes is to simply fill a small bowl with warm water and a couple of teaspoons of soda. Simply add one brush at a time to the bowl and swirl it around. You will be able to see the makeup coming off in the water. Let the brushes soak for 15 minutes, rinse & air-dry before using.
2. Nail Care & Cleaner
Baking soda can also be used to whiten nails and exfoliate your cuticles and skin. Simply make a paste with baking soda + water and rub it in a circular motion over the hands, fingers & nails then rinse off. If you have yellow-stained nails from too much nail polish, blend baking soda with lemon juice and apply it to your nails and rinse.
3. Calluses
Baking soda can also be used to soften and remove calluses. Simply soak your feet in warm water mixed with 3 TBSP of baking soda for 20-40 minutes. Do this daily or as needed. You may also add a few drops of essential oils like eucalyptus, rosemary, peppermint, or lavender to the water to boost relaxation and freshen your feet. Another thing that will help is using baking soda + water paste to exfoliate the toughened skin before rinsing, drying, and moisturizing.
4. Teeth Whitener
This is one of my favorite ways to use baking soda as my teeth get easily stained by coffee & tea. Simply make a paste using coconut oil & baking soda to the consistency of your liking and brush. You can do this throughout the day, or a couple of days and notice a drastic difference. Some of my favorite essential oils I like to add to this paste for taste and added protection include peppermint, thieves & spearmint.
5. Deodorant
Create an all-natural deodorant paste. Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda and 1/3 cup of arrowroot powder to a mixing bowl. Stir to combine them thoroughly using a spoon. Add ⅓ cup of coconut oil. Next, add ⅓ cup of coconut oil to the powder mixture. Make a cream with the mixture until it has the texture of a thick paste. You can more coconut oil if the mixture is still too powdery. Finally, add 10-15 drops of your favorite essential oils to the mixture.

6. Heartburn
Heartburn happens when the band of muscle at the end of your esophagus doesn’t close all the way and allows stomach acid and undigested food to rise up into your throat. Baking soda can be used to neutralize the excessive acid in your stomach which will soothe the flaming feeling in your chest and throat. Simply mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda into an 8-ounce glass of warm water, stir until dissolved, and drink quickly.
7. Alkaline Water
This water has a higher pH level than regular drinking water and for this reason many people claim it will help with the acid in your body. It is also known to be absorbed much faster by your body so it is recommended for athletes or people who need an extra boost of hydration (during sickness especially). Regular water normally has a PH of 7, and alkaline water typically has a pH level of 8-9. Alkaline water can be made with baking soda and lemon. Simply add 1/2 of a tablespoon of baking soda to 8oz of purified water, squeeze a slice of lemon, mix and enjoy! Though lemons are acidic they have an alkalizing effect in your body.
8. Cold Symptoms
Baking soda can be used to clear and rinse nasal passages. Simply mixed a quarter teaspoon of baking soda and salt in 8 oz of warm water, mix and use a bulb syringe or neti pot to rinse. The minerals found in this water will help reduce bacteria populations and clear congestion from your sinuses. This mixture can also be gargled to soothe a sore throat.
9. Sunburn Relief
Simply add ½ cup of baking soda to your warm bathwater and allow yourself to soak for natural relief. You can also make a paste with baking soda and water to make a cool compress and apply it to skin directly. For an extra soothing effect you can add a few drops of lavender essential oil to these recipes.
10. Canker Sores
To soothe canker sores formed inside your mouth simply add baking soda to your mouthwash and rinse. To make your own mouthwash mix a half teaspoon of baking soda to half a glass of water and a few drops of spearmint and peppermint oil.
cleaning
11. Disinfectant
Baking soda is a natural antiseptic which makes it great to use as a natural cleanser for personal hygiene. Simply mix 4 oz of water + 2 TBSP of vinegar + 2 teaspoons of baking soda in a small glass and clean your toothbrushes and hairbrushes. Multiply recipe as needed.
12. Odorizer
Baking soda can be used to freshen up many items in your home. If you have a smelly rug, couch, carpet, trash can...etc. Simply sprinkle baking soda liberally and let it sit for 15+ minutes then vacuum it up. To make this extra effective and lasting I totally recommend adding the Young Living Purification essential oil blend to your mixture and be incredibly pleased! To eliminate lingering odors in your refrigerator you can add a freshly opened box of baking soda and leave it inside.
13. Oven Cleaner
Simply mix 2 TBSP of baking soda with warm water and spray it in your oven 6-7 times - the thicker this mixture the better it will work. Let it sit for 1 hour and then turn the oven on to 100 degrees. Let it cool down and while it’s still warm (but not hot) use a brush or aluminum sponge, a watered-down vinegar spray, and a rag to scrub and wipe everything out. The method (minus the heat) can also be used to clean stove tops & microwaves.
14. Removing Stains
If you have any plastic, ceramic, or metal containers that have been stained with food simply make a solution with 4 TBSP of baking soda and a quart of warm water. Use a sponge to scrub and remove the stain. Add baking soda to scrub as needed. This method can also be used to remove kitchen counter stains and cutting board stains.
15. Foods
Baking soda mixed with water can help remove the dirt and wax coating that comes with fruits and vegetables from the supermarket.
16. Dishes
You can increase the power of your favorite dish soap by simply adding a few tablespoons of baking soda to your hot soapy water. All you really need to remove some grease is hot water, baking soda, and a scrub sponge. This soapy water can also be used to clean your brushes and remove stains/bad odors from your sink sponges. If you use very concentrated dish soap (like the one pictured) you can stretch it by diluting a third of it with hot water and a few sprinkles of baking soda. This will triple your dish soap amount!!
17. Grill
Simply sprinkle some baking soda before scrubbing your grill and notice the difference it can make.
18. Crock-pot
Crockpots can easily get food built up that can feel impossible to remove. Just fill your crockpot with water, add ¼ cup of baking soda and cook on high for 3-4 hours. This heated mixture will soften up residue. Pour the water out and scrub with baking soda as needed.
19. Silverware
To spruce up your silverware, line a pan with aluminum foil, place silver pieces on top of the foil. On the side, bring a pot of water to a boil and ¼ of a cup of baking soda to the water and stir. Pour the baking soda mixture over the tarnished pieces in the pan and let them soak for 10 minutes, rinse and dry each piece with a towel- this will buff each piece to its original sparkle.
20. Toilets
Simply mix ½ cup of baking soda with ½ cup of borax, and sprinkle 5 drops of lemon essential oil. Use1 cup of vinegar and pour it into the toilet, then sprinkle baking soda + borax mixed. Let it sit for 10-20 minutes, scrub and flush.
